Crown of Shadows.</i> It's the end of a trilogy, but I read it first. I don't regret it. I probably wouldn't have read it if I started at the beginning, which was pretty miserable until around 200 pages in. But with the last book...damn, the end is one of the very few books that made me cry. (And didn't involve animals as the main characters. =P)

46) What is your favorite candy?
Chocolate truffles! Three of them give you 60% of your saturated fat for a whole day. And they are worth every bit of it.

47) Favorite Sports Team?
Team Me, Myself, and I. (Spoken like a true Satanist. =P)

48) What song do you want played at your funeral?
Something wholly inappropriate. And 80's. New Wave. *nods*

49) What were you doing at 12 AM last night?
Reliving the horrible year 1990 at the Breader's Cup. Three breakdowns that one year; the one you'll hear the most about is Go for Wand. I highly recommend you not go looking for the Distaff race, as her breakdown was right at the finish and was incredibly gruesome. I cannot recall the other two that year, as Go For Wand's was so bad, no one talks about the others.

It's bizarre, really. The early 90's were bad for breakdowns (Union City and Prairie Bayou on the Triple Crown series, both of which I saw live); Go For Wand, the sprint horse, and I'm thinking it was one in the Classic too, which I also saw live. Then things were pretty uneventful until Charismatic broke down right at the finish of the Belmont (Charismatic, however, was saved by some quick thinking from his jockey.)

It's probably been about ten years since the breakdowns seemed to start up again. Barbaro, of course, and George Washington, and Pine Island, Midway Cat, and now Eight Belles. I'm sure I missed some (having a real job cuts in on horse race watching) but unless I'm crazy, there have been more in the past few years, at least in the big races.

I don't know -- I'm not really trying to make a point here. Other than to say that the fans watching now THINK they've seen horror shows with Barbaro. But they weren't there for Go For Wand. Complain about Eight Belles' lack of photographic evidence if you want...but you honestly don't want to see the pictures. Barbaro had his legs wrapped. Eight Belles did not.

But if you really want to "see what you missed" just look for the 1990 Distaff. And then I don't want to hear you complain one bit about how they handled Eight Belles with video coverage. Things like that don't leave you.

50) What was the first thing you thought of when you woke up?
"Shut up; I want to sleep!" =P
